New home for drawing and painting classes of Missouri State University's Art + Design department for the Fall 2008 semester - Brick City, newly renovated building located at 305 West Mill Street in downtown Springfield.

JJ Sturgeon, (BFA in ART, Animation emphasis, 2008), is currently working for Slappy Studios in Los Angeles where he has just finished work on visual effects for two soon-to-be-released films: Chicago Pulaski Jones, directed by and starring Cedric the Entertainer; and Dark Country, directed by Thomas Jane and starring Ron Perlman.


Adam Bowlin, BFA animation student from Art + Design, and members of the Missouri State University Advertising Team will soon see their many months of hard work broadcast throughout the United States in the form of a $15 million national public service campaign. "Go Green. Go Public." add campaign was presented in Washington, D.C. to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and was chosen first place in the national competition. The competition began with thirteen top-rantked Ad Teams from across the country and was whittled down to a final three to prepare complete campaigns. Teams from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Pittsburgh also made presentations and were given second and third place respectively.

The "Go Green. Go Public." campaign for the APTA is aimed at encouraging 18-25 year olds to help the enviornment by using public transportation. The campaign incorporates interactive media, including a GoGreenGoPublic.com website, online ads, and television, radio and print ads.


Electronic Arts student work featured in international exhibition and was shown at the Moxie Cinema
This special effects portion of the Electronic Arts 2008 student production, Apollo, was featured in the very prestigious, very competitive animation exhibition program at SIGGRAPH, an international conference for computer graphics in August. Blaine Morehead was the digital effects artist on the project.

Greg Schrick, Animation Alumni, with his Emmy Award. He won a Mid-America Emmy Award for his animation work for the FOX station in St. Louis.

Andy Netterville (2008) is in his first year teaching Graphic Design and 3D Animation at the Olathe Northwest High School's e-Communication program in Olathe, Kansas. While Andy studied Art Ed at Missouri State, he ultimately graduated with a BFA in Art, Animation emphasis in 2003. In 2006, he acquired his K-12 teaching certification.

Keith Ekstam, MSU Ceramics professor and Robin Lowe, Art and Design Gallery Director, recently returned from Qingdao University in Shandong Province, People’s Republic of China. During this trip, they met with officials from Qingdao University and the QU Art Department. From these meetings, it is hoped that Qingdao University Art faculty members will travel to MSU as visiting artists in October, 2009. Additionally, an exhibition of artwork by the visiting artists is tentatively planned in the Art and Design Gallery during the October and November 2009 time frame. These activities are being planned in conjunction with the generous assistance from the MSU Office of Research and Economic Development. As these events develop, we will keep the public updated.

.............................Jane Colvin and Ashford Stamper had their illustrations selected to be included in the Society of Illustrators Scholarship Competition. Their work was among 125 others that were chosen out of over 4000 student works from schools nationwide. Winners will be selected out of the 125. Award Ceremony and Opening Reception will be held in New York City on Friday, May 8, 2009; Exhibition Dates May 6 - June 6, 2009.

Fang-Yi chen is serving as a resident visiting artist in ceramics this semester, Spring 2009, at Missouri State University's Art + Design deaprtment. Fang-Yi is currently working in the ceramics studios creating sculptural and pottery forms, working alongside and interacting with our art majors. This creative work will be exhibited a Srpingfield Pottery during the month of april with a First Friday Artwalk reception scheduled for April 3. This event is free and open to the public and she hopes everyone can attend. She will also conduct a clay workshiop at Springfield Pottery on Saturday, April 4. Please contact Springfield Pottery as details develop.

Fang-Yi Chen is a second-year graduate student at Tainan National University of the Arts in southern Taiwan. She has been actively showing her work and participating in arts related activities in Taiwan for the past several years. She is the fifth resident artist MSU's Art + Design Department has hosted in ceramics and metals/jewelry as part of an on-going exchange with TNNUA's Graduate Institute of Applied Arts. This spring two recently graduated ceramics and metals/jewelry students will work in Taiwan as guests of that institution.
