Admission Requirements

To begin course work in the field of art education, you initially need to be admitted to Missouri State. Before completing 75 credit hours, you must also be admitted to a degree program.

The admission process

To gain full admittance into the art education program, follow the steps below:

  1. Declare or change your major to art education by visiting the Academic Advising and Transfer Center.
  2. Meet with your assigned advisor to discuss admission requirements and to develop a plan of study.
  3. Complete the program’s admission requirements.
  4. Work with the art and design department to complete the Application to a Degree Program form to update your record.

When you declare your major, you will be listed as a pre-major until you satisfy all admission requirements.

Art Education

Bachelor of Science in Education (Certifiable grades K-12)

Admission requirements

In addition to completing Foundations courses (ART 100, 101, 110, 115) students must have a combined GPA (Missouri State and transfer combined) of at least 2.50, GPA in Art Education of 2.50, and a grade of "C" or better in ART 360. Application for admission to the degree program may be made after completion of 30 hours and must be made before 75 hours have been completed.

Major requirements (69 hours):

Note: three hours may double count toward General Education requirements.

  1. Specific General Education requirement: ART 271(3) or 272(3) or 273(3) or 274(3).
  2. Foundations (12 hours): ART 100(3), 101(3), 110(3), 115(3).
  3. Art History (9 hours):
    1. ART 272(3), 273(3).
    2. One course from ART 480(3), 484(3), 485(3), 486(3), 487(3).
  4. Studio Art (30 hours):
    1. ART 212,3), 215(3), 225 (3), 235(3), 242(3) or 243(3), 253(3), 255(3).
    2. Three courses from: ART 210 3), 223(3), 312(3), 315(3), 322(3), 323(3), 325(3), 335(3), 342(3), 359(3), DES 300(3), PHI 320(3); or two courses plus ART 354(3) or 355(3) or 356(3).
  5. Art Education (15 hours): ART 360(3), 366(3), 401(3), 460(3), 466(3).
  6. Public Affairs Capstone Experience will be fulfilled by completion of ART 490(12).

Professional Education requirements (8 hours):

Note: A grade of “C” or better in each course is required for state certification.

  1. PSY 360(3) Educational Psychology.
  2. LTC 474(3) Reading and Writing in the Content Fields.
  3. SPE 340(2) Educational Alternative for Exceptional Students.
    Note: Teaching methods and supervised teaching are also listed in Art Education above: ART 360(3), 366(3), 401(3), 466(3), 490(12).

This program also requires compliance with Teacher Education for eligibility to enroll in Professional Education courses; admission to and continuance in Teacher Education; approval for supervised teaching; and recommendation for certification which includes following GPA requirements. All GPA requirements include both Missouri State and transfer grades.

  1. at least a 3.00 GPA in the certificate subject area (major field of study) which includes all courses listed under major requirements.
  2. at least a 3.00 GPA in any additional certificate subject area.
  3. at least a 3.00 GPA in the professional education courses which includes all courses in number 1 and 2; and no grade lower than a "C" in all professional education courses.

Some Professional Education courses require admission to Teacher Education. Students must consult their program for any additional admission to Teacher Education and degree requirements. The program outlined above has been designed to prepare teachers and to meet the requirements for Missouri state teacher certification.
